Class Action over Yahoo Email Scanning May Proceed
Over the past couple of years, several lawsuits have cropped up over the legality of email scanning for targeted advertising purposes. I blogged about a case against Google last year. Those cases ended up in Judge Lucy Koh’s courtroom and earlier this week, she decided that a class action lawsuit against Yahoo may proceed. The plaintiffs, who were non-Yahoo users who had sent email to Yahoo users, claimed that Yahoo’s practice of scanning and analyzing emails violated federal and California wire-tapping laws. Judge Koh had previously dismissed the case as Eric Goldman noted last year.
