Insurers of World Trade Center Towers must pay double

After 11 days of deliberation, a federal jury ruled on December 6 that the destruction of the Trade Center towers constituted two “incidents” under the relevant insurance policies, so the developer, Larry Silverstein, is entitled to collect up to $2.2 billion from nine insurance companies.  In previous litigation with nine other insurers, the court ruled that the destruction was a single incident.   Silverstein appealed the earlier ruling, and the nine insurance companies are expected to appeal the most recent determination.  Silverstein settled with five other insurers.   For more information, see the New York Times coverage.
